Cardinals’ trade pitch lands Packers’ $84 million veteran to replace injured Sean Murphy-Bunting
The Arizona Cardinals are hopeful for a stronger season ahead, particularly when it comes to making a playoff push. Last year, the team was in the hunt but ultimately fell just short. Confidence is high on the offensive side of the ball, but the Cardinals announced Thursday that veteran cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting will miss the entire season. Now, Arizona will do everything in its power to find a suitable replacement.
“Heading into the second year of a three-year, $25.5 million contract, the Cardinals could be in the hunt for a starting cornerback. They drafted Will Johnson in the second round this year,” Jeff Kerr wrote.
One name to watch is Packers star Jaire Alexander. He’s been in contract discussions with Green Bay since the offseason began, but no agreement has been reached. It appears the Packers aren’t eager to let Alexander walk away easily.
“A lack of updates could stem from the Packers potentially having second thoughts on sending Alexander to free agency with a buyout,” Chris Schad wrote.
While a deal may not be finalized until after June 1, Alexander could be a prime trade target for Arizona. He would bring veteran leadership and high-level play to a secondary now missing a key piece.
“Murphy-Bunting’s injury creates a situation where the Cardinals could pursue Alexander despite his own injury history. Although he hasn’t played 1,000 snaps since his 2020 Pro Bowl campaign, Alexander has posted an overall PFF grade over 70 or better in all seven seasons with the Packers,” Schad wrote.
The Cardinals are now faced with two clear options: rely on second-year player Max Melton and rookie Will Johnson, or make a move for Alexander – a decision that could pay off significantly if he stays healthy. With Arizona’s offense shaping up well, adding Alexander could be the missing piece to elevate their defense and strengthen their postseason chances.
